Typica
The heirloom coffee that crossed an ocean, outlived a flood, and became the root of most of the world's arabica.
- The first arabica seedlings reach Batavia from Malabar. A flood takes them before they can grow.
- A second shipment arrives and survives. These Typica plants become the coffee the world will simply call Java.
- A single plant from Java is sent to the botanical garden in Amsterdam.
- One of its descendants is given to Louis XIV. From there, Typica travels on to the Caribbean and the Americas.
